NAEP Technical DocumentationStudent Booklets for the 2000 Mathematics Assessment

The mathematics student booklets used in the 2000 NAEP assessment comprised six blocks in the following order:

  • one block of general background questions,
  • one block of mathematics-instruction-related questions,
  • three cognitive blocks, and
  • one block of questions asking the student about his or her motivation and familiarity with assessment tasks.

Whereas the 2000 booklets contained three cognitive blocks that were designed as 15-minute blocks, every assessment after the 2000 assessment would be designed with instruments containing only two cognitive blocks per booklet, with each block designed as a 25-minute block. This change was made to bring the mathematics block testing time in line with the other NAEP subject areas that had been utilizing the 25-minute block design for several assessments.

For the 2000 assessment, instrument developers chose 30 blocks from the 1996 assessment—10 blocks at each grade. In addition, they created three new blocks at each grade. No items from the 2000 mathematics assessment were released, so that they may be used again in a future assessment. However, sample questions from the 2003 and pre-2000 assessments are available to the public and can be accessed via the NAEP Questions Tool.

The tables below display the NAEP 2000 mathematics assessment student booklet configurations for grade 4, grade 8, and grade 12.
