National assessments are based on national probability samples of schools and students that allow for national and regional reporting only. The target grades are 4, 8, and 12. Prior to 2002, national assessments were conducted during the 12 weeks from early January through late March. Since 2002, assessments have been conducted during the 6 weeks from late January through early March.
National assessments are based on subject area frameworks developed by the National Assessment Governing Board. NAEP assesses and reports results for the following subject areas:
- the arts;
- civics;
- economics;
- geography;
- mathematics;
- reading;
- science;
- technology and engineering literacy;
- U.S. history; and
- writing.
