NAEP Technical DocumentationSummarizing the Results

Upon completion of all general sessions, field staff calculate the total session attendance rate to determine whether a make-up session must be scheduled. A make-up session is required when the total session attendance rate is below 90 percent. Field staff schedule a make up session with the school coordinator prior to departing the school.

Field staff calculate the total session attendance rate using the following formula:

  • Add the number of students originally sampled plus any sampled newly identified students to obtain the total number of students sampled.

  • Add the number of students who refused to participate or whose parents refused to permit them to participate to obtain the total number of refusals.

  • Subtract the refusals from the number sampled to determine the number of students to be assessed.

  • Divide the number of students assessed by the number to be assessed. If the quotient is below 90 percent, a make-up session is required.
