NAEP: COVID-19 Resources

NCES is committed to creating a safe environment with increased flexibility for schools, students, and field staff throughout NAEP administration. Find information on current NAEP participation below.

NAEP 2021 School Survey

In February 2021, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) launched the NAEP 2021 School Survey PDF File Click to open pdf., which surveyed approximately 3,500 schools each month at grades 4 and 8 through May. With the participation of educators and school leaders across the country, the survey provides data on instructional modes and attendance rates starting in March through the end of the 2020-21 school year.

The survey was conducted in accordance with the Executive Order on Supporting the Reopening and Continuing Operation of Schools and Early Childhood Education Providers, which mandates that the Director of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) collect the data necessary to fully understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on schools, including the status of in-person learning at schools across the country.

The data will be used to provide crucial contextual information for understanding 2022 NAEP assessment results. The results are available through an online dashboard which reports the percentages of students who received instruction remotely, in-person, or in a hybrid instructional mode for selected districts, states, and the nation. Results are also reported for various student groups, in addition to information about attendance rates.

See the new Highlights report which focuses on in-person, hybrid, and remote enrollment results (as of June 2, 2022).
