1Loans to students include only loans made directly to students. Federal loans to parents (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students [PLUS]) and other loans made directly to parents are not included.

2Average grants or loans were calculated by dividing the total amount of grants or loans awarded by the total number of students awarded grants or loans.

NOTE: Title IV institutions are those with a written agreement with the U.S. Department of Education that allows the institution to participate in any of the Title IV federal student financial assistance programs. United States includes the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The four U.S. service academies that are not Title IV eligible are included in the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) universe because they are federally funded and open to the public. However, these four U.S. service academies are not included in this table. Percentages in the rows of this table use the corresponding count in the "Full-time, first-time undergraduates enrolled" row as the denominator. Detail may not sum to total because students with more than one source of financial aid were counted for each type of aid they were awarded but were included only once in the total count. Definitions for terms used in this table may be found in the collection year’s archived downloadable glossary located at https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/use-the-data/annual-survey-forms-packages-archived?year=2018.
