1 Loans to students include only loans made directly to students. Federal loans to parents (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students [PLUS]) and other loans made directly to parents are not included.

2 Average grants (or loans) were calculated by dividing the total amount of grants (or loans) awarded by the total number of students awarded grants (or loans).

NOTE: Title IV institutions are those with a written agreement with the U.S. Department of Education that allows the institution to participate in any of the Title IV federal student financial assistance programs. The four U.S. service academies that are not Title IV eligible are included in the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) universe because they are federally funded and open to the public. Percentages in the rows of this table use the corresponding count in the Full-time, first-time undergraduates row as the denominator. Detail may not sum to total because students with more than one source of financial aid were counted for each type of aid they were awarded but were included only once in the total count. Definitions for terms used in this table may be found in the IPEDS online glossary located at https://surveys.nces.ed.gov/ipeds/VisGlossaryAll.aspx.
