Finding Data on CIP Codes

Over the last few months, NCES has been receiving questions such as “How can I find a list of schools that use a specific CIP Code?” and “How can I find what CIP Codes my postsecondary institution uses?”. The quickest and easiest way to answer both of these questions is to use the NCES website College Navigator, which presents the data collected from the IPEDS surveys for each postsecondary institution. This blog posting shows step by step how to find answers to these questions using College Navigator.

On the home page of the College Navigator website, there is an icon of a book with the text “Browse for Programs” beside it. In the screen shot below this icon has a red box around it.

Click on the Browse for Programs icon and a dialog box will pop up with a list of possible programs and majors.

While it may not seem obvious at first, the list of programs and majors is actually a list of 2 digit CIP codes organized in alphabetical order instead of numerical order. The numbers in parentheses at the end of each line refers to the number of categories or CIP Codes which can be found in each of the categories. There are two different ways that the user can select a CIP Code. The first is to type the name of the program in the search box. In this example, the user is searching for schools that offer a program in Landscape Architecture.

After typing Landscape Architecture into the search box and clicking Search, College Navigator returns a list of relevant CIP Codes. To select the CIP Code that is the best match, click the add Button.

After clicking add, the text for the program(s) that have been selected changes color from Black to Gray and the icon changes from add to remove. If there is a CIP Code(s) that you selected by accident, simply click the remove icon. After confirming that you have selected the appropriate CIP Codes, click on the x in the upper right hand corner to close the Program/Majors Selected and you will return to the College Navigator homepage.
