The purpose of the CIP Specialist Blog is to provide additional information about using the CIP and how to code different academic programs. These issues typically require a longer, more detailed response than what can be covered in the FAQs.
The CIP Specialist is written by a team of NCES employees and contractors that are knowledgeable about the CIP. Please submit any questions or comments you might have by email to CIPSPECIALIST@ed.gov.
A new CIP Specialist blog will be published approximately every other month or more frequently if needed. Whenever a new blog is released, it will be announced in This Week in IPEDS, and the NCES and IPEDS Twitter Feeds.
CIP 2020 includes 459 new 6-digit CIP Codes and the creation of Series 61 (Medical Residency/Fellowship Programs).

In CIP 2020, Series 01 was renamed from Agriculture, Agriculture Operations, and Related Sciences to Agricultural/Animal/Plant/Veterinary Science and Related Fields.
The crosswalk matches postsecondary programs of study providing graduates with skills and knowledge to be successful in their occupations.

Over the last few months, NCES has been receiving questions such as “How can I find a list of schools that use a specific CIP Code?” and “How can I find what CIP Codes my postsecondary institution uses?” . The quickest and easiest way to answer both of these questions is to use NCES website College Navigator, which presents the data collected from the IPEDS surveys for each postsecondary institution.
