Metadata Working Group

Purpose: The National Forum on Education Statistics (Forum) has convened a working group to update and expand the 2009 publication Forum Guide to Metadata: The Meaning Behind Education Data. The update will incorporate the recent experiences that state and local education agencies (SEAs and LEAs) have had with data anomalies, and reflect changes in metadata best practices and data technologies over the past decade. The document will aim to focus on metadata use, including how metadata can help manage data complications, improve data quality, and resolve data anomalies. This information is intended to assist agencies in using metadata to document operational changes that impact data, such as a switch to a new assessment system that affects trend data, as well as external events that interrupt the normal collection and retention of key data.

Current Tasks: The Metadata Working Group is currently developing a new Forum resource.
