Estimated Expenses for Full-time Beginning Undergraduate Students
  • Beginning students are those who are entering postsecondary education for the first time.
  • No detailed yearly expense data available.
  • West Point is a federally-funded military institution. All cadet expenses - including tuition, room and board, and supplies - are paid in exchange for no fewer than 5 years of service in the United States Army after graduation. More information on the undergraduate budget is available at https://s3.amazonaws.com/usma-media/inline-images/Parents/pdf/cadet_budget_2019_2020.pdf
Alternative Tuition Plans
  • No alternative tuition plans are offered by this institution.
Undergraduate Student Financial Aid, 2019-2020
  • There is no tuition or financial aid at the U.S. Military Academy. The U.S. Army pays 100% of the tuition, room board, and medical dental costs for all cadets. This means that all West Point cadets attend on a full scholarship, in return for a service commitment upon graduation (currently 5 years active and 3 years inactive reserve duty). Also, each cadet receives a salary that covers the costs of uniforms, books, supplies, etc., that cadets need while at West Point.

  • This institution did not award financial aid in 2019-2020, therefore net price information was not reported.
Net Price Calculator
An institution’s net price calculator allows current and prospective students, families, and other consumers to estimate the net price of attending that institution for a particular student.

First-to-Second Year Retention Rates

Retention rates measure the percentage of first-time students who are seeking bachelor's degrees who return to the institution to continue their studies the following fall.

Retention Rates for First-Time Students Pursuing Bachelor's Degrees
Student retention:
Estudiantes a tiempo completo: 99%
Percentage of Students Who Began Their Studies in Fall 2019 and Returned in Fall 2020
  • Higher than typical retention rate is due to reduced attrition during COVID-19 pandemic in the spring and summer of 2020.
Overall Graduation Rate and Transfer-Out Rate

The overall graduation rate is also known as the "Student Right to Know" or IPEDS graduation rate. It tracks the progress of students who began their studies as full-time, first-time degree- or certificate-seeking students to see if they complete a degree or other award such as a certificate within 150% of "normal time" for completing the program in which they are enrolled.

Some institutions also report a transfer-out rate, which is the percentage of the full-time, first-time students who transferred to another institution.

Note that not all students at the institution are tracked for these rates. Students who have already attended another postsecondary institution, or who began their studies on a part-time basis, are not tracked for this rate. At this institution, 100 percent of entering students were counted as "full-time, first-time" in 2020.

  • Alternative measures of student success are reported by degree-granting institutions to describe the outcomes of degree/certificate-seeking undergraduate students who are not only first-time, full-time students, but also part-time attending and non-first-time (transfer-in) students. These measures are also reported for students receiving Pell grants and those students that do not receive Pell grants. These measures provide the 8-year award-completion rates by award level (certificates, associate's and bachelor degrees) after entering an institution. For students who did not earn any undergraduate award after 8-years of entry, the enrollment statuses are reported as either still enrolled at the institution, or subsequently transferred out of the institution. Unlike the Graduation Rates data, all reporting institutions must report on their transfer outs regardless if the institution has a mission that provides substantial transfer preparation.

  • The United States Military Academy (USMA), United State Naval Academy (USNA), and United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) fall under the Department of Defense, not the Department of Education. Consequently, these Military Service Academies do not participate in the Title IV student aid programs and are not subject to the Clery Act. However, under the National Defense Authorization Act, they are mandated to report information about efforts to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and sexual assault at the military academies directly to Congress. This comprehensive report, the Department of Defense's Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies, includes data on reported incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault involving cadets and midshipmen.
