State Dropout and Completion Data

All the data files, including the most recent releases, are available here: https://nces.ed.gov/ccd/files.asp.

The primary purposes of the State Dropout and Completion Data File are:

  • to report the numbers of dropouts from each of grades 9–12 and the relevant event dropout rates; and
  • to report the numbers of high school diploma recipients, other high school completers, and the relevant Averaged Freshman Graduation Rate (AFGR).

Beginning with the 2005–06 school year the CCD is reporting dropout data aggregated from the local education agency (district) level to the state level. This allows data users to compare event dropout rates across states, regions, and other jurisdictions. The dropout data in this file were reported at the local education agency level and the enrollment base used to calculate the event dropout rates was reported at the school level.

Counts of regular diploma recipients and the AFGR are also reported on this file. The diploma count was reported for the given year at the state level and is compared with the average of the 8th grade enrollment count from 4 years earlier, the 9th grade enrollment count from 3 years earlier, and the 10th grade enrollment count from 2 years earlier to determine the AFGR. The regular diploma count and the enrollment base for the AFGR were reported at the state level.

Other High School Completer counts and General Education Development (GED) test completers are also presented on this file. Both counts were reported at the state level.

If you have any questions on this data set please contact the EDFacts team.

The annual reports using this CCD file's data are the Dropouts, Completers and Graduation Rate Reports.
