Public Elementary/Secondary School Locale Code Files
These files include geocoding information for schools as reported on the annual Common Core of Data School Universe Survey. The information includes the NCES school identification code; latitude and longitude of the reported address; and two locale codes. Locale code is a measure of a school’s location relative to populous areas. The metro-centric locale codes developed and used by NCES include 8 categories that range from large city to rural. The new urban-centric locale categories, introduced with these files, serve the same purpose as the metro-centric categories, but are defined by a combination of their population and their distance from an urban area. There are a total of twelve urban-centric categories, organized in a two level hierarchy; the four categories of the upper level (city, suburban, town, rural) are each divided into three subcategories.
