This publication provides descriptive findings from the 2012/14 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:12/14) focusing on attainment, persistence, and retention in postsecondary education. BPS:12/14 is a nationally representative longitudinal sample survey of students who began postsecondary education for the first time during the 2011–12 academic year; this first follow-up represents students’ experiences about 3 years after their initial enrollment. Among 2011–12 first-time postsecondary students, 7 percent had completed a certificate, 7 percent had completed an associate’s degree, and 1 percent had completed a bachelor’s degree at any institution within 3 years. Another 39 percent had not earned a credential and were enrolled at a 4-year institution, 16 percent were enrolled at a less-than-4-year institution, and 30 percent were not enrolled at any institution by the spring of 2014. |

These Web Tables provide estimates of certificate credit requirements, certificate completion times, and labor market outcomes for undergraduate students who entered postsecondary education for the first time in 2003–04 and whose postsecondary transcripts indicated the first credential earned by spring 2009 was a subbaccalaureate certificate (certificate completers). The results are based on data from about 1,700 certificate completers representing a population of approximately 311,000 students in the 2003–04 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study, Second Follow-up (BPS:04/09), a nationally representative sample of undergraduates first interviewed during the 2003–04 academic year and followed over a period of 6 academic years. |

This study uses a classification scheme, the Community College Taxonomy (CCT), to analyze outcomes for beginning community college students according to how "directed" (strongly directed, moderately directed, or not directed) they are toward completing a program of study. Levels of direction are based on factors associated with student persistence and degree attainment, and outcomes examined included institutional retention, student persistence, 4-year transfer rates, enrollment continuity, and first-year attrition. The study is based on data from the 2004/06 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/06), a national sample of undergraduates who enrolled in postsecondary institutions for the first time between July 1, 2003, and June 30, 2004; participants were interviewed in 2004 and 2006. This study includes only students who initially enrolled in a community college and were not enrolled concurrently in any other institution. Some key findings include:
