IPEDS Peer Analysis System – CIP:2000 Conversion of 2002 Completions Data

In Fall 2002, IPEDS respondents were given the choice of reporting Completions data using either the 1990 Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) or CIP:2000 edition. In order to provide consistency for analysis purposes, when data were migrated to the IPEDS Peer Analysis System (PAS), NCES converted all 1990 CIPs to CIP:2000. This means that an institution’s data may look different through the PAS than through the data collection system. If an institution reported using 1990 CIP codes, and if one or more of these were changed for 2000 (changed, merged, or deleted), then the PAS would include a re-coding into the CIP:2000 codes. The re-coding allows NCES to have one 2002 Completions data file, thus making it possible to analyze Completions data across all institutions, rather than having two separate files (one for reporters using 1990 CIP and the other for those that converted to CIP:2000).

Next fall, should respondents choose to report using CIP:2000, NCES will preload the converted CIP:2000 codes into the data collection system from the PAS, even if 1990 CIPs were reported last fall. Institutions may still opt to report using the 1990 CIP for one remaining year.
