3. CIP 2020 Website Updates

Updates have recently been made to the 2020 Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP 2020) website (https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/), including the following:

- FAQs have been added to the "General" FAQs which address how STEM is defined and how the Student Financial Aid Division at the Department of Education utilized CIP Codes and the CIP-SOC Crosswalk.

- FAQs have been added to the "Coding" FAQs defining combined medical residency/fellowship programs and multiple pathway medical fellowship programs, explaining the logic for moving veterinary programs, and defining which CIP Codes are considered STEM fields, who is responsible for this designation and how different federal agencies use the CIP.

- The 2020 CIP to 2018 SOC Crosswalk is now available for download from the Resources section of the CIP Website. The crosswalk is a joint effort by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). It matches postsecondary fields of study (6 Digit CIP Codes) to detailed occupational codes (6 Digit SOC Codes) based on their descriptions. The CIP-SOC crosswalk is designed to help prospective students identify what programs of study they need to take in order to be qualified to perform an occupation and to help students already enrolled in a program of study find work upon graduation.

- CIP Website training resources were updated to explain how CIP is used by NCES and other federal agencies, and how to use the CIP Wizard

For questions about CIP 2020, please email ipedsdatafeedback@ed.gov.

4. CIP Blog

NCES is pleased to announce the release of the new blog "Ask the CIP Specialist" at https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/blog.aspx?y=56. This blog is devoted to exploring complex questions about CIP Codes that require responses longer than what is typical in a FAQ. The blog will be updated approximately every other month and more frequently if needed. NCES staff members and contractors will be writing the blogs and responding to questions and comments on them. Currently, there are 3 blog posts which cover the following topics: Health Care CIP Codes, Agriculture CIP Codes, and the CIP-SOC Crosswalk. Please submit your questions and ideas for topics by email to CIPSPECIALIST@ed.gov.
