Additional Proposed Changes for the 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20 Data Collections Open for 60-Day Comment Period

See the Federal Register posting [Federal Register Volume 81, Number 220, Page 80049] opening the 60-day public comment period on the request to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for additional changes to the 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20 IPEDS data collections. Detail on the proposed changes can be found in the Supporting Statements posted on the www.regulations.gov website at: https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=ED-2016-ICCD-0127 .  Comments should be submitted through the site linked above and are due by January 17, 2017.

Outcome Measures (OM) Data Revisions to be Requested

As noted in the October 4, 2016 This Week in IPEDS, the Outcome Measures data collected in 2015-16 have not yet been released due to data inconsistency issues.  In order to address these issues, NCES and the IPEDS Help Desk will soon be contacting institutions via email and requesting that institutions revise their data using the Prior Year Revision System (https://surveys.nces.ed.gov/IPEDS_py/).  Institutions that receive such an email are asked to review the email carefully and revise their data during the upcoming IPEDS Winter data collection.

Fall 2015 Provisional Data Release

A First Look report on Postsecondary Institutions and Price of Attendance in 2015-16; Degrees and Other Awards Conferred: 2014-15; and 12-Month Enrollment: 2014-15 (Provisional Data) was released 11/15/16 and the data are available from the Use the Data portal: http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/Home/UseTheData .  Additionally, the “Reported Data” for Fall 2015 are now available in the Use the Data portal.

Federal Government Seeks Comment on Student Unit Record Ban

Please note that the Federal Government is currently seeking comments related to the ban on student unit record data collection.  Details are available at: https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=USBC-2016-0003-0001  The Evidence-Based Policymaking Commission Act of 2016 (Pub. L. 114-140), enacted March 30, 2016, established a 15-member Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking. The Commission is charged with examining strategies to increase the availability and use of government data, in order to build evidence related to government programs and policies, while protecting the privacy and confidentiality of the data. Over the next year, the Commission will consider how data, research, and evaluation are currently used to build evidence and continuously improve public programs and policies, and how to strengthen evidence-building to inform program and policy design and implementation. The public comments received from this request will be used to inform future deliberations of the Commission, and comments will be accepted through December 14, 2016.
