ECLS Data Issues

This page provides information on data anomalies, errors, and considerations identified after the release of an associated data file’s user’s manual. Please see Appendix A of the user’s manuals for issues that had been identified at the time of data file release.

Other anomalies, errors, and considerations may exist in the data; the ones listed here are noted so that users are aware these issues with the data exist. However, leaving the anomalous or erroneous data as they are will not significantly affect most analyses, because the number of cases affected is generally very small. An exception to this is programming errors that affect entire groups of cases that should have been asked certain questions. Additionally, analyses focused on a small subpopulation or examining rare characteristics could be significantly affected by data issues with even a small number of cases. Therefore, analysts doing such analyses should consider the impact these data issues may have on their results.

ECLS-K

  • ECLS-K corrected theta scores: There is an error in the data set contained in Childk8p.zip, Childk8p.z01, Childk8p.z02, Childk8p.z03, Childk8p.z04, Childk8p.z05. Corrected theta scores for all cases across all years of the study can be accessed here.
  • ECLS-K household roster: During all seven waves of the ECLS-K, family roster data were collected that identified the type of relationship between each roster member and the study child. There were 13 types of relationships that a roster member could have with the study child. For wave 4 (spring first grade) and wave 5 (spring third grade), individuals who were identified as the relationship type “grandfather” had their value on the corresponding relationship type variable set to -7 and individuals who were identified as the relationship type “aunt” had their value on the corresponding relationship type variable set to -8. For more information about this error including information on how to correct the error, see the errata sheet here.

ECLS-K:2011

  • Spring second-grade (round 6) parent interview: Some questions about communication issues (CHQ205 (P6PRBART); CHQ206A-H (P6TLKLD, P6TLKSFT, P6CHEW, P6SWALLO, P6STUTER, P6CLEFT, P6ABNRML, P6MALFRM)) were asked again in spring 2013 even though the specifications indicate that they could have been skipped when there were data from this section in spring 2011 or spring 2012. For cases with data for these items in both spring 2013 and a prior spring round, the spring 2013 data could be used for more updated information.
