NAEP assessment results by metro-centric locales, 2000–2005

Before 2006, NAEP results were presented by metro-centric locales usually grouped into three mutually exclusive location categories: "Central city", "Urban fringe", and "Rural". The label "Central city" referred to Large and Midsize cities (Locale codes 1 and 2). The label "Urban fringe" referred to the Urban Fringe of a Large City, Urban Fringe of a Mid-size City, or a Large Town (Locale codes 3, 4, and 5). The label "Rural" referred to Small Town; Rural, outside CBSA; or Rural, inside CBSA (Locale codes 6, 7, and 8). For more information see the description in the Urban\Rural Classification Systems, Locale codes section.
