NOTE: Because the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is principally an OECD study, the results for non-OECD jurisdictions are displayed separately from those of the OECD countries. The PISA index of economic, social and cultural status (ESCS) was created using student reports on parental occupation, the highest level of parental education, and three PISA index variables related to family wealth, home educational resources and possessions related to “classical” culture in the family home. Out-of-school learning hours were reported in five categories and recoded as a continuous variable. “No time” in any given activity is recoded to 0 hours per week in that activity, “less than 2 hours per week” is recoded to 1 hour per week, “2 or more but less than 4 hours per week” is recoded to 3 hours per week, “4 or more but less than 6 hours per week” is recoded to 5 hours per week and “6 or more hours per week” is recoded to 7 hours per week. Standard error is noted by s.e. In the country column, italics indicate non-national entities.
