The Technical Group is responsible for providing most of the statistical data used for indicators of participation, access, human and financial resources, and school completion in Education at a Glance (EAG). This includes both developing a conceptual framework for reporting on education systems and conducting methodological studies to confirm the validity and comparability of these data, as needed.
Thirty countries, including the United States, actively participate in the Technical Group. Additionally, there are observer countries and representatives from Eurostat (the statistical agency of the European Commission), UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), and Eurydice (an information network on education in Europe).
The Technical Group has two major roles: (1) the maintenance of the ongoing joint survey of basic education statistics for OECD, Eurostat, and UNESCO; and (2) the development and production of indicators for EAG.
Indicators produced by the Technical Group include: relative size of the school population, educational expenditure per student, support for students and households through public subsidies, and access to and participation in tertiary education, among many others.
In addition to on-going work on educational finance and graduation rates, the Technical Group has recently taken up development work on: early childhood education and care, the internationalization of higher education, and class size.
