1 Parental school involvement was constructed by counting seven variables that describe the participation of the parent/guardian or other adult in the household in the following activities since the beginning of 2009-2010 school year: attending a general school meeting; attending a meeting of the parent-teacher organization; going to a scheduled parent-teacher conference; attending a school/class event, such as a play, dance, sports event, or science fair; serving as a volunteer with student's class; participating in school fundraising; or meeting with a school counselor. Only parents/guardians who provided a response for all activities are included.
2 Parental cognitive stimulation/learning activities was constructed by counting eight variables that describe activities that the parent/guardian or another family member has done with their 9th graders: visiting a zoo, planetarium, museum, etc; working or playing on a computer together; building or fixing something such as a car or appliance; attending a school science fair; helping with a science fair project; discussing a program or article about math, science, or technology; visiting a library; or going to a play, concert, or live show. Only parents/guardians who provided a response for all activities are included.
3 Activities outside of school that the 9th grader participated was constructed by counting seven variables that describe activities in which the 9th grader participated: music, dance, art, or theater; organized sports; religious youth group/instruction; scouting or another group/club activity; outside academic instruction such as Saturday academy, learning center, private tutor; a math or science camp; or another camp. Only parents/guardians who provided a response for all activities are included.
NOTE: Totals are weighted by W1STUDENT and other estimates are weighted by W1PARENT. Details may not sum to 100 percent due to rounding.
