The exhibit below provides an overview of federal data collections that include questions on education, training, and non-degree credentials for work. Links are provided to questionnaire items and instruments; where instruments are not available, links are provided to the data collection websites. Beginning Postsecondary Students Survey (BPS), NCES, ED 2014 2016 Postsecondary students enrolled for first time in 2011-12 CATI and web 6-year longitudinal; new cohort every 8 yrs. Two questions will be included in 2014 follow-up (1st of 2 follow-ups). Link to BPS website.

National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG), National Science Foundation 2015 (2016) Adults under age 76 with at least a bachelor's degree prior to 2014 Mailout and web, with CATI follow-up 4-cycle biennial rotating panel; new cohort every 2 yrs Eleven questions included in 2015. Adult Training and Education Study (ATES) Pilot test 2010 2013 Adults in households, ages 16 or older CATI One time This was the first study to field test new items on certifications, licenses, and educational certificates. Findings are available in the ATES report. The ATES questionnaire is included in Appendix E of the report.
National Adult Training and Education Survey (NATES) 2013 (Fall/Winter 2015) Adults in households, ages 16-65 Mailout One time This was a response rate study to test the feasibility of a mailout administration. Link to instrument.
Adult Training and Education Survey (ATES) feasibility study (within the NCES National Household Education Survey (NHES)) 2014 (2015) Adults in households, ages 16-65 Mailout One time This study tested the feasibility of including an adult data collection within the NHES program. The study fielded a revision of the original ATES instrument, as well as a shorter "Credentials for Work Survey" (CWS) instrument. Link to NHES website. Link to 2014 ATES questionnaire.
