About the Author

Dale Ballou is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His research specializes in the economics of education, with particular focus on policies that effect teacher recruitment and performance. His work, much of it in collaboration with Professor Mike Podgursky of the University of Missouri, has appeared in the Journal of Human Resources, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, among other publications. Their book, Teacher Pay and Teacher Quality, was published by the W.E. Upjohn Institute in 1997.

Professor Ballou received his doctorate from Yale University in 1988 and spent one year at North Carolina State University before joining the economics department at the University of Massachusetts in 1989.
