| NOTE: Status completion rates measure the percentage of 18-24 year-olds who have left high school and who also hold a high school credential. High school credentials include regular diplomas and alternative credentials such as GEDs. Beginning in 2003, respondents were able to identify themselves as being more than one race. The 2003 categories for White, non-Hispanic and Black, non-Hispanic contain only respondents who indicated just one race. The Hispanic category includes Hispanics of all races and racial combinations. Due to small sample size for all of the years depicted in the figure, American Indians/Alaska Natives are included in the totals but are not shown separately. Asian/Pacific Islanders are also included in the totals but not shown separately as that group has only recently been sampled in adequate numbers to be reported separately (see table 9-A and 9-B). The more than one race category in 2003 is also included in the total but not shown separately due to small sample size. The variable nature of the Hispanic status rates reflects, in part, the small sample size of Hispanics in the CPS. Estimates beginning with 1987 reflect new editing procedures instituted by the U.S. Census Bureau for cases with missing data on school enrollment items. Estimates beginning in 1992 reflect new wording of the educational attainment item in the CPS. Estimates beginning in 1994 reflect changes in the CPS due to newly instituted computer-assisted interviewing. For details about changes in CPS over time, please see Kaufman, Alt, and Chapman (2004).
