NOTE: The states of Alaska, Illinois, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Vermont, and Washington did not participate in the 1992 NAEP Trial State Assessment, the source for these data. Differences exist in the wording of the question regarding calculator use and in the samples of students questioned that may account for difference in results between the United States' averages on the two questionnaire administrations, the IAEP and the NAEP. See supplemental note for Indicator 17 for an explanation of the difficulties inherent in comparing results between the two administrations.
