‡Reporting standards not met.
Index based on students' responses to four statements: 1) I usually do well in mathematics; 2) Mathematics is more difficult for me than for many of my classmates (reverse scored); 3) Mathematics is not one of my strengths (reverse scored); 4) I learn things quickly in mathematics. Average is computed across the four items based on a 4-point scale: 1. Agree a lot; 2. Agree a little; 3. Disagree a little; 4. Disagree a lot. High SCM indicates agreeing a little or a lot on average across the four statements. Low SCM indicates disagreeing a little or a lot on average across the four statements. Medium SCM indicates mixed attitudes across the four statements.
Index based on students’ reports on frequency of and amount of time spent on homework. High TMH indicates more than 30 minutes of mathematics homework assigned 3-4 times per week. Medium TMH includes all possible combinations of responses not included in the high or low categories. Low TMH indicates no more than 30 minutes of mathematics homework assigned no more than 2 times per week.
Data are available for at least 70 percent but less than 85 percent of students.
Met guidelines for sample participation rates only after substitute schools were included.
National Target Population does not include all of the International Target Population defined by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China.
National Defined Population covers less than 90 percent of National Target Population (but at least 77 percent).
Kuwait tested the same cohort of students as other countries, but later in 2007, at the beginning of the next school year.
National Defined Population covers 90 to 95 percent of National Target Population.
NOTE: TIMSS scores are reported on a scale from 0 to 1,000, with the scale average fixed at 500 and the standard deviation fixed at 100. Countries were required to sample students in the grade that corresponded to the end of 8 years of formal schooling, providing that the mean age at the time of testing was at least 13.5 years. Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding. Standard errors appear in parentheses.
