NOTE: Italicized scale score values indicate that two or more groups had the same rounded average score. The average scale scores, when rounded, were the same for nonpublic- and Catholic-school students at grade 4 in 2002. Participation rates for Catholic-school, and Other nonpublic-school students at grade 12 did not meet the minimum criteria for reporting in 2002.

Major Findings

  • The average writing scores for fourth- and eighth-grade public-school students were higher in 2002 than in 1998.
  • No significant change was detected between 1998 and 2002 in the average score of twelfth-graders attending public schools.
  • At all three grades in 2002, students attending nonpublic schools had higher average writing scores than their peers attending public schools.
