NOTE: The methods used to identify the type of school location for the 2002 assessment were different from those used for prior assessments; therefore, only the data from the 2002 assessment are reported.

Major Findings

  • The average writing scores of students in all three grades in urban fringe schools were higher in 2002 than for students in central city schools and rural schools.
  • The average writing scores of fourth- and eighth-graders in rural schools were higher than those of their peers in central city schools.
  • The average writing scores of twelfth-graders in 2002 in central city schools were higher than those of students in rural schools.
