NOTE: NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The three levels for each grade are Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the U.S. history achievement levels.
Percentages within each U.S. history achievement-level range may not add to 100, or to the exact percentages at or above achievement levels, due to rounding.
Results are based on administration procedures that did not permit accommodations.

Major Finding

  • At grade 12, there was no statistically significant difference in the percentage of students at or above any of the achievement levels among any of the racial/ethnic subgroups between 1994 and 2001.
