NOTE: NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The three levels for each grade are Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the U.S. history achievement levels.
Percentages within each U.S. history achievement level may not add to 100, or to the exact percentages at or above achievement levels, due to rounding.
Results are based on administration procedures that did not permit accommodations.

Major Findings

  • The percentage of fourth-graders performing at or above Basic increased since 1994.

  • There were no significant changes in the percentages of fourth-graders performing at or above Proficient and at Advanced since 1994.
