NAEP Technical DocumentationReporting Populations

As with the 2000 national main assessment, the 2001 geography and U.S. history assessment data can be analyzed for two types of reporting populations.

  • The traditional reporting population is made up of nonaccommodated students who did not need accommodations along with SD/LEP students that were assessed under the set of administration rules that did not provide accommodations (SD/LEP students assigned to sample type S2 schools). This nonaccommodated reporting population is also known as the "R2" reporting population.

  • The second reporting population is made up of the accommodated students who did not need accommodations along with SD/LEP students that were assessed under the set of administration rules that provided accommodations (SD/LEP students assigned to sample type S3 schools). The reporting population of accommodated is students is also known as the "R3" reporting population. Each grade and both assessments (geography and U.S. history) had both reporting populations. Thus there are four separate sets of weights for each grade: R2 U.S. history, R2 geography, R3 U.S. history, and R3 geography.

Up to this point, the set of student weights for each grade and subject represent the target student population for each sample type (S2 and S3). R2 and R3 reporting population weight files are created for each grade and subject by splitting the appropriate student weight files by SD/LEP status and sample type. R2 and R3 reporting weights are obtained by adjusting the student weights by the appropriate reporting factor. Each assessed and excluded student received the reporting factors for reporting population R2 and for reporting population R3. These two reporting factors for each student ij are designated as REPFijR (R=2,3).
