Mathematics Cognitive Items

The NAEP mathematics framework guides the item development efforts. Items are written by NAEP staff, members of the Mathematics Assessment Standing Committee, and elementary, secondary, and postsecondary teachers around the country. All assessment materials are reviewed by specialists in mathematics education, measurement, assessment development, and bias. The cognitive items are assembled into 15-minute question blocks covering the following five mathematical content strands:

  • number sense, properties, and operations;
  • measurement;
  • geometry and spatial sense;
  • data analysis, statistics, and probability; and
  • algebra and functions.

Following approval from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the blocks are spiraled into booklets and shipped to schools for the administration of the assessment.
