Teacher Questionnaire

To provide supplemental information about the instructional experiences reported by students, the teacher for the subject in which students are being assessed at grades 4 and 8 completes a questionnaire about instructional practices, teaching background, and related information. Content of the teacher questionnaires for the 2000 assessment differed from that of the 2001 questionnaires.

NAEP 2000 Teacher Questionnaire

Part I: Background, Education, and Training includes questions pertaining to:

  • teacher's gender and race/ethnicity;
  • years of teaching experience;
  • certification, degrees, major and minor fields of study;
  • coursework in education;
  • coursework in specific subject areas;
  • amount of in-service training;
  • extent of control over instructional issues; and
  • availability of resources for their classroom.

Part II: Classroom Organization and Language Arts Instruction includes questions pertaining to:

  • extent of instructional activities in class;
  • time spent on language arts tasks; and
  • types of materials used by the teacher to form his or her reading program.

Part III: Professional Development

Part IV: Accountability includes the following sections:

  • Section A: Language Arts Content Strands
  • Section B: State Language Arts Assessment
  • Section C: State Accountability System

NAEP 2001 Teacher Questionnaire

Part I: Background, Education, and Resources includes questions pertaining to:

  • years of teaching experience;
  • certification, degrees, major and minor fields of study;
  • coursework in education;
  • coursework in specific subject areas; and
  • amount of in-service training.

Part II: Computer Resources and Technical Assistance in the School

Part III: Classroom Organization and Social Studies Instruction includes questions pertaining to:

  • frequency of homework assignments;
  • extent of instructional activities in class;
  • extent to which state or local standards impact instructional practices; and
  • use of computers in class.

Part IV: Professional Development - Language Arts (in the grade 4 teacher questionnaire only)
