NAEP Technical DocumentationStudent Booklets for the 2003 Reading Assessment

In 2003, instrument developers chose 16 blocks from the 2002 assessment—7 at the fourth-grade level and 9 at the eighth-grade level. (Grade 12 was not assessed in 2003.) In addition, they created five new blocks—two at the fourth-grade level and three at the eighth-grade level. Two blocks at grades 4 and 8 each were released to the public and can be viewed on the NAEP Questions Tool. Time allotted per block was 25 minutes; the exception was block 13 which was allotted 50 minutes. The tables below display the NAEP 2003 reading assessment student booklet configurations for grade 4 and grade 8.

1 Two new blocks were developed at grade 4 for the 2003 assessment: R11 and R12.
NOTE: The legend for the table is as follows: R = Reading; Y1BD = Year 2002/grade4/Background question directions; D = General student background questions; BR = Background questions for Reading. Although similar block numbers exist at different grades (e.g., Block R3 appears at grades 4 and 8), the items that compose each block are different.
