NAEP Technical DocumentationStudent Booklets for the 2003 Mathematics Assessment

The mathematics student booklets used in the 2003 NAEP assessment comprised four blocks in the following order:

  • two cognitive blocks,
  • one block of general background questions, and
  • one block of mathematics-instruction-related questions.

This differed from the previous mathematics assessment in 2000 for which the booklets contained three cognitive blocks. NAEP item developers reduced the number of blocks per booklet, because the testing time allotted for each block (in accordance with the number of items in the block) increased from 15 minutes per block (in 2000) to 25 minutes per block (in 2003 and all future assessments).

For the 2003 assessment, NAEP item developers created 10 blocks of items at each grade—eight blocks using items from the 2000 assessment and two blocks of new items developed for the 2003 assessment. Three blocks at grade 4 and three blocks at grade 8 from the NAEP 2003 mathematics assessment were released and are available to the public via the NAEP Questions Tool.

The tables below display the NAEP 2003 mathematics assessment student booklet configurations for grade 4 and grade 8.
