NAEP Technical DocumentationNAEP Data Explorer

The NAEP Data Explorer is a web-based system that provides the user with tables of detailed results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) national and state assessments. It is hosted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and accessible at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/nde. The data are based on information gathered from the students, teachers, and schools that participated in NAEP.

The NAEP Data Explorer evolved from a series of web-based presentation models of NAEP results. Prior to the introduction of the NAEP Data Explorer, the presentation of the NAEP results were referred to as the Summary Data Tables or SDTs and were available in portable document file (PDF) format only. The current tool draws on a large database of student- and school-level responses to compute statistics in real time for every response variable in all main assessments since 1990. It delivers dynamic, customizable tabular summaries that can be extracted to other software products, including word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and statistical applications. Another important attribute is the ease it provides users to compare a state's results to those of the nation, the region, and other participating states in NAEP's assessments.
