National Main Assessments

National main assessments are based on national probability samples of schools and students that allow for reporting at the national, regional, and student group levels. NAEP assesses students in grades 4, 8, and 12, though the NAEP assessment schedule does not call for all grades to be assessed each year. Prior to 2002, national main assessments were conducted during the 12 weeks from early January through late March. Since 2002, assessments have been conducted during the six weeks from late January through early March.

National main assessments are based on subject area frameworks developed by the National Assessment Governing Board. NAEP assesses and reports results for the following subject areas:

Future NAEP assessments may include foreign language or world history.
