Pilot and field tests are conducted to evaluate new assessment items, materials, and field operation procedures in preparation for subsequent assessments. Items are pilot tested at least two years before the assessment year for which they have been developed. Field tests are conducted the year prior to an operational assessment to facilitate item calibration and set achievement levels. Results are not reported for these tests.
