Prior to 2003, the region variable (REGION) was defined as one of the four groups of geographical regions listed in the table below: Northeast, Southeast, Central, and West. All 50 states and the District of Columbia were included. Although the Census was one source of information for this variable, it was not the only source, so, to bring NAEP into line with other federal data collections, beginning with the 2003 assessment, NAEP began using the Census as its sole source for this variable.
