NAEP Technical DocumentationStudent Group "Parents' Education Level" Used in NAEP Data Analysis

The parents' education level variable (PARED) is reported as the highest level of schooling achieved by students' parents. It is reported at four levels—did not finish high school, graduated high school, had some education after high school, or graduated college. PARED is defined by student responses to questions about the extent of schooling experienced by each of their parents. The response indicating the highest level of education was selected for reporting.
