2005 Trial Urban District Assessment in ScienceThe Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA), a special project in NAEP, began assessing performance in selected large urban districts in 2002 with reading and writing assessments, continued in 2003 with reading and mathematics, and included reading, mathematics, and science in 2005. Ten large urban school districts participated in 2005. The 2005 NAEP Science results for the participating districts are available, as well as comparisons to public school students' performance in the nation and in large central cities. Results from the TUDA are based on comparisons between students in urban districts and large central city schools because these schools represent a peer group and are an appropriate comparison. See a summary of the district-level results for the 2005 TUDA in Science. Who was assessed? In 2005, ten urban school districts participated in the TUDA in science at grades 4 and 8: Atlanta City School District, Austin Independent School District, Boston School District, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, City of Chicago School District 299, Cleveland Municipal School District, Houston Independent School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, New York City Public Schools, and San Diego Unified School District. The District of Columbia, which participated in the reading and mathematics TUDA, was unable to participate in the 2005 TUDA science assessment because the district did not have enough students to cover all three assessments. Student samples in these 10 districts were enlarged beyond usual NAEP samples so that reliable district-level data could be produced. The results for these districts are for public school students only. Students in the TUDA samples are also included in "higher-level" samples. For example, data from students tested in the Los Angeles sample were used to report results for Los Angeles, and also contributed to the California and the national samples.
