NOTE: NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The three levels for each grade are Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the science achievement levels.
Percentages within each science achievement-level range may not add to 100, or to the exact percentages at or above achievement levels, due to rounding.
Results are based on administration procedures that did not permit accommodations.

Major Finding

• For each racial/ethnic subgroup at grade 4, none of the apparent changes between 1996 and 2000 in the percentage of students attaining any of the achievement levels were statistically significant.
