NOTE: NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The three levels for each grade are Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the science achievement levels.
Percentages within each science achievement-level range may not add to 100, or to the exact percentages at or above achievement levels, due to rounding.
Results are based on administration procedures that did not permit accommodations.

Major Finding

  • At grade 12, the percentage of White students at or above Basic was lower in 2000 than in 1996. None of the other apparent changes for the various subgroups were statistically significant.
