NOTE: NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The three levels for each grade are Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the science achievement levels.
Percentages within each science achievement-level range may not add to 100, or to the exact percentages at or above achievement levels, due to rounding.
Results are based on administration procedures that did not permit accommodations.

Major Finding

  • For twelfth-graders whose parents had some education after high school or who graduated college, the percentage at or above the Basic achievement level decreased between 1996 and 2000.
