Practical Reasoning

According to the NAEP science framework, practical reasoning includes the ability to apply appropriate scientific knowledge, problem-solving skills, and thinking processes to the solution of real ("everyday") problems. The assessment probes students' abilities to

  • think abstractly and consider hypothetical situations;
  • consider several factors simultaneously;
  • take an objective view of situations; and
  • realize the importance of practical reasoning and experience.
