State Results for the NAEP 2003 Reading Assessment

The NAEP 2003 reading assessment was administered to representative samples of fourth- and eighth-graders in participating states and other jurisdictions. NAEP began state-by-state reading assessments in 1992 with fourth-graders, and with eighth-graders in 1998.

In 2003, 50 states and 3 jurisdictions at grade 4 and grade 8 participated in the reading assessment and met student and school participation criteria for reporting results. For more information about the NAEP state assessment, read Interpreting NAEP Reading Results.

To help place state results in context, look at additional information about:

• percentages of students excluded and assessed:
  • accommodations not permitted (fourth-grade state and eighth-grade state); and
  • accommodations permitted (fourth-grade state, and eighth-grade state).
• school-age resident population and enrollment;
• poverty status of school-age children and children served under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Chapter 1, from non-NAEP sources: By state, 2001 and school years 1990–91 through 2000–01; and
• education expenditures per pupil, annual salaries of teachers, and pupil-teacher ratios.
