Average reading scale scores, by student-reported parents' highest level of education, grade 8: 1992–2003

NOTE: Data were not collected at grade 8 in 2000.
Significance tests were performed using unrounded numbers. NAEP sample sizes have increased since 2002 compared to previous years, resulting in smaller detectable differences than in previous assessments.

Major Findings

• At grade 8, average scores were higher in 2003 than in 1992 for students who reported at least one parent "graduated high school" or "graduated college".
• Higher levels of parental education were associated with higher average scores.
