National Subgroup Results

In addition to presenting information about all students' performance, NAEP looks at the achievement of various subgroups of students. Examining these results reveals how these students have performed in comparison to each other in the year 2003 and whether they have progressed since 1992.

The 2003 reading results for the nation are reported for the following groups of students:

• gender;
• race/ethnicity;
• eligibility for free/reduced-price lunch;
• parents' education level;
• type of school; and
• type of location.

When reading these results, it is important to keep in mind that there is no simple, causal relationship between membership in a subgroup and reading achievement. A complex mix of educational and socioeconomic factors may interact to affect student performance.
