SOURCE: National Center for Education Statistics, National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP), 1992-2000 Reading Assessments.

  • Fourth-graders who did not do their homework scored lowest.
  • Fourth-graders who reported doing homework for one-half hour or for one hour per day outscored their peers who reported doing more than one hour of homework daily.
  • The percentage of fourth-graders who said they do not have homework assigned to them declined from 16 percent in 1992 to only 10 percent in 2000.
The NAEP 2000 reading assessment included background questions that asked students about their reading experiences at home and at school. While findings may suggest a positive or negative relationship between performance on the reading assessment and certain activities, it is important to remember that such relationships are not necessarily causal--there are many diverse factors that play a role in reading ability.

See the results for another Home/School factor from the 2000 reading assessment.
