  • For girls, the percentage at or above Proficient in 2000 was higher than that in 1992. For boys, the percentage in 2000 was not significantly different than in 1992.
  • In 2000, more girls than boys reached or exceeded the Proficient level.
NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board. The three levels for each grade are: Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the reading achievement levels.
